Gibson Island Club seeks an experienced and dynamic General Manager to lead and grow its full-service, premier yacht yard within the Boat Works Department. Located along the scenic waters of the Chesapeake Bay and the Magothy River in Anne Arundel County, this role offers a unique opportunity to build and manage a high-performing marine operation in a truly exceptional coastal environment. Job Summary:
The Boat Works General Manager is responsible for setting growth strategies and revenue goals, managing the departmental budget, and overseeing efficient day-to-day operations. This role develops and maintains internal work order, scheduling, and production systems to ensure high-quality, cost-effective marine services. Working in close collaboration with the Operations Manager and Service Manager, the General Manager implements standardized procedures, promotes safe working conditions, and continuously improves operational effectiveness.
This position plays a key leadership role in recruiting, developing, and training a skilled team of marine technicians and specialists capable of repairing, restoring, hauling, maintaining, and storing a wide variety of vessels. The General Manager fosters a strong service-oriented culture, interfaces effectively with a diverse customer base, and ensures exceptional member and guest experience.
Financial Overview:
The General Manager has financial responsibility for the department, including developing and managing the annual budget, monitoring results, and implementing corrective actions to address variances. This role also oversees billing, service management, and ensures parts and inventory systems are in place to support efficient operations.
Most Critical Skills & Requirements
- Proven leadership experience managing within full-service marine or yacht yard operation, including budgeting, scheduling, and service delivery
- Extensive knowledge of marine systems, vessel repair and restoration practices, and yard operations
- Demonstrated ability to lead, train, and develop skilled marine technicians and support staff while fostering a safety-first culture
- Strong business acumen with experience developing operational systems, controlling costs, analyzing financial performance, and driving growth
- Customer-focused leadership style with excellent communication and relationship-management skills
- Ability to prioritize and coordinate multiple projects based on technical requirements, resources, and service commitments
- Working knowledge of service management, billing, inventory, and work-order systems; proficiency with Microsoft Office and service-tracking software
